1976 Cessna 340A RAM VII

The Peoria, Illinois owner of this aircraft purchased the aircraft in 1992.  It has served this construction company well with regular flights throughout the upper Midwest.  Throughout this above-average ownership period, the aircraft has received excellent maintenance from well-known maintenance shops.

JTA first met the owner in the mid-1990’s at a Twin Cessna Flyer Organization’s Operations Seminar.  Over the years JTA has occasionally advised the owner on routine actions, equipment upgrades, value, etc.

In March 2004 TAS Aviation in Defiance, Ohio; one of the country’s top Twin Cessna Maintenance Specialists, converted the aircraft to a RAM VII.   TAS installed the RAM Modified Continental TSIO520-NB providing 335 HP with a 1600 Hour TBO.  Also installed were new Hartzell Simitar Propellers with a 2000 TBO and new Governors.

In addition, the RAM Conversion includes several other STC Engine Modifications.  A detailed review of the RAM VII Conversion for the 340A can be seen at RAM’s website – www.ramaircraft.com.

The strength of the RAM VII Conversion is the larger Turbocharger and Intercooler, which provides greater horsepower at altitude.

Regardless if now reading this text narrative online or having received an Information Package from JTA, please now view the narrated video provided at www.jtatwins.com.  A review of this aircraft Avionics, Equipment, Systems and Cosmetics is provided.  Even if this particular 340A is not of further interest, much of the information provided in the video applies to other 340’s.

The aircraft exterior paint is rated by JTA as a condition “8”.  With a little professional detailing this can be improved.  An often JTA suggested action is paint touch-up.  For approximately $3,000.00 aircraft paint touch-up specialists can do wonders.  Areas that get considerable abuse are the Tow Bar area, Inboard Wing Leading Edges, Fuselage Ice Protection Plates and other areas can be matched to the existing paint.

JTA has noted that both the Pilot and Copilot Windshields and Side Windows look good.  JTA saw no crazing, scratches or deformities.

This aircraft is equipped with Deicing and Anti-Icing Equipment that is referred to as Full Deice.  It is not Certified for Known Ice.  JTA states that for the overwhelming majority of 340 operations and 340 pilots, a fully deiced aircraft is satisfactory.  JTA acknowledges that there are locations and operations that need an aircraft with the Known Icing Certification.

This aircraft has Outer Wing and Full Tail (vertical & horizontal stabilizers) Deice Boots.  The Wing Boots are excellent.  Each Horizontal Stabilizer Boot has 3-4 patches.  This is not uncommon since the Horizontal Stabilizer Boots take considerable abuse from the Prop Wash (thrust) especially on extended pre-take off run-ups.  There are several firms throughout the USA that perform the Boot Rejuvenation Treatment.  The process makes the Boots look like new and all patches are removed.  Cost is approximately $3000.00-$3,500.00 for the entire aircraft.

The Hartzell Simitar Propellers have electrically heated Anti-Ice Boots.  Heat is also provided to the Pitot Tube and Stall Vane.

JTA rates the aircraft’s interior a strong condition “8-1/2”.  Again, with a little professional detailing this can be improved.   The Leather and Fabric Seats and Side Panel looks good, as does the Carpet.  The Headliner and Interior and Plastic are in very good condition.

The aircraft is heated by the use of the warm air produced by the pressurization system and a 35,000 BTU heater/defroster.  The proper use of both “free heat” from the engines and the Heater will keep all occupants comfortable.  The Defroster should also be thought of as a component of Windshield Deicing.

This RAM VII 340A’s Gross Take-Off Weight is 6390 lbs.  With an empty weight of 4639 lbs. the Useful Load is 1751 lbs.  With a Full Fuel Capacity of 183 gallons (1098 lbs.), the aircraft’s payload is 653 lbs.

Though technically an Optional System, consider the 163-gallon capacity as standard.  This consists of the two 50 gallon Main (Tip) Tanks and a 31.5 gallon Auxiliary Tank within each wing.  Thus, 50 + 50 + 31.5 + 31.5 = 163 Usable Gallons.  163 Gallons x 6 lbs. = 978 lbs.

For most flights 163 gallons (Main and Aux Tanks) is adequate fuel.  With 163 gallons (978 lbs) the payload (passenger and baggage) is 773 lbs.

JTA will Flight Plan for 190 KTA’s and expects 190-205 KTA’s at 65% power.

Range at 65% power with 183 gallons fuel is 183 gallons @ 40 gph = 4.58 hr x 190 KTA’s = 870 NM (No Wind/No Reserve).

Range at 65% power with 163 gallons fuel is 163 gallons @ 40 gph = 4.08 hr x 190 KTA’s  = 775 NM (No Wind/No Reserve).

Additional aftermarket Nacelle Fuel Tanks (18.5 gallons each) can be added.  This aircraft could accommodate from one to three additional 18.5 gallon tanks, increasing fuel capacity from 18.5 to 55.5 gallons.  Some or all Wing Locker storage would be eliminated.

SALES PROCEDURES:

A formal Offer To Purchase an airplane is submitted on JTA's standard Offer To Purchase form.  The offer to purchase is not the final Purchase Agreement.  The offer simply establishes the rules/procedures for the sale.

When an Offer is accepted, a five percent (5%) fully refundable deposit is immediately due and placed in Escrow with Aero Space Reports of Oklahoma City.  Pre-Purchase Inspection logistics/scheduling are then discussed.  JTA makes every possible effort to satisfy the schedule/needs of the Buyer, Seller, Inspecting Shop and JTA.  Upon satisfactory completion of the Buyer's Pre-Purchase Inspection, full funding/closing takes place.  The Escrow Agent pays off any existing liens/loans guaranteeing the Purchaser clear title.  Normally, Buyer and Seller split the Escrow Fee - approximately $300 - $350 each.

In ninety percent (90%) of sales in which JTA is brokering the aircraft, the Purchaser requests/seeks JTA's well respected hands-on supervision of the entire acquisition process, including JTA's delivery support.  Therefore, JTA does attend the Inspection and in fact orchestrates/directs the entire process.  Note, however that a formal mechanical inspection is conducted by a maintenance facility at Purchaser's expense.  JTA assists the Buyer by conducting the evaluation flight and then provides hands-on direction of the inspection process.  Any major discrepancies are discussed and, in most cases, satisfactorily resolved between Buyer and Seller.  It's JTA's mission to produce a pleased and satisfied Buyer and Seller.  JTA then directs the funding/closing actions.  Upon full payment of the aircraft and official change of ownership, JTA normally assists the new Owner with a dual instruction delivery flight to the Purchaser's home airport or to a training or maintenance facility.  In certain cases, additional dual training is provided by JTA.  JTA is reimbursed all normal travel expenses associated with travel to and during the pre-purchase inspection and associated with the delivery flight.  Expenses are not marked up, just simple reimbursement i.e. airfare, hotel, taxi, rental car.  Additionally, JTA is pleased to provide Buyers with post-sales assistance/advice for as long as they own the aircraft.

For the busy professional/business person, JTA can manage post-sale maintenance/modifications.

Completely under a separate agreement, JTA works with experienced shops that can conduct all levels of

maintenance and modifications plus Avionics, Painting and Interior changes.  References are available.

The Twin Cessna Flyers Owners Organization provides excellent Owner support.  Contact Larry Ball at (260) 749-2520 for membership details.  If you own any twin Cessna - you must join the TCF!  The Group's Operation and Engine Seminars (Systems, Systems, Systems) is a superb course.  See www.twincessna.org for more information.

Besides viewing the Narrated Video on JTA’s website, all Twin Cessna customers will benefit from viewing all other areas of www.jtatwins.com  See Buyer and Seller Services, Temple’s Tips, Links and see Customer Letters and Stories.

This aircraft’s Annual Inspection is due on 6/30/08.  A wise Buyer will now act on this ready to go to work aircraft and combine a Pre-Purchase Inspection that rolls into the Annual Inspection.  JTA frequently coordinates this type of sales scenario.

A Buyer can now proceed with discussion with JTA.  With an Accepted Offer, the Pre-Purchase/Annual Inspection can likely be completed by late May.

With formal training required, the new Owner can likely be flying in this Ram VII 340A in early Summer.
